Taking a Temperature with an Infrared Thermometer
Share
Measuring someone’s temperature can be done a range of ways, including with an oral thermometer, a tympanic thermometer or a forehead thermometer.
Using infrared technology, a forehead thermometer measures the surface temperature of the skin without requiring the test administrator to touch them. Non-contact infrared thermometers or NCITs provide a safe, contactless way to test temperature in the workplace. Read on to learn how to use an infant thermometer.
How to use an Infrared Thermometer
Improper use of NCITs may result in inaccurate temperature readings. For this reason, it is important to thoroughly understand and strictly adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions before, during and after use, which typically include the guidelines below.
Preparing the device
The environment may greatly impact the accuracy of a reading. For optimal results, use in a draft-free space, removed from direct sunlight or radiant heat sources. Typically, the environmental temperature should be between 16-40 ºC and have a humidity below 85%.
The NCIT should be placed in the testing environment at least 10-30 minutes before use. This allows the device to adjust to the environment and ensure a more accurate temperature reading.
Cleaning infrared thermometer between uses
Cleaning between uses is usually important after each use, especially in a pandemic situation when the risk of transmission is high. Follow the instructions listed on your devices product instructions. Most NCITs should never be submerged in water or other liquids.
Preparing the person being evaluated
The person being tested should ensure:
- The test area of the forehead is dry, clean and not blocked by anything during measurement, such as the sun.
- The person’s body temperature at the test area has not been altered in any way. Increased or decreased temperatures may result from direct sun exposure, headbands or bandanas, or facial cleansing products.
Using the NCIT
For proper use of the NCIT, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and guidelines. Typical instructions for NCIT usage may include:
- Holding the infrared thermometer perpendicular to the forehead and instructing the person to remain still during measurement.
- The distance between the device and person varies per device. Please see devices instructions for further details.
- Do not touch the sensing area and keep the sensor dry and clean.
Keep Your Workplace Safe
NCITs can help to keep your workplace safe by offering a range of benefits, including:
- A non-contact approach which can reduce the risk of spreading infection
- Easy to use, clean and disinfect
- Measures and displays temperatures quickly
- Can retest rapidly
- Easy to transport
