VINScreen COT – Cotinine (Nicotine Metabolite) Rapid Urine Test Cassette

Single-panel urine cassette for rapid qualitative detection of Cotinine — the primary metabolite of nicotine — at a cut-off of 500 ng/mL. Ideal for determining smoking status in workplace wellness, insurance, and pre-employment programs.

Rapid onsite screening 1 panel — Cotinine Read at 5 min Urine sample

Panel & Cut-Off

COT (Cotinine) — 500 ng/mL
Detects the primary metabolite of nicotine with a detection window of up to 2–3 days after nicotine use.

What It Detects

Cotinine from all nicotine sources — cigarettes, e-cigarettes/vapes, nicotine patches, gum, nasal sprays and secondhand smoke exposure above the cut-off threshold.

Best For

Insurance health assessments, smoke-free workplace programs, pre-employment screening, smoking cessation monitoring, and healthcare or wellness programs.

Performance & Accuracy

Metric Result
Overall accuracy vs GC/MS 98.8%
Positive agreement 97.1%
Negative agreement >99.9%
Read time 5 minutes
Sample type Urine
Sensitivity (cut-off) 500 ng/mL

Note: Screening results are preliminary. Any positive result should be confirmed by a secondary analytical method such as GC/MS as required by your program policy.

How to Use
  1. Allow the test cassette and urine specimen to reach room temperature (15–30°C).
  2. Remove the cassette from the sealed pouch and place on a clean, level surface.
  3. Hold the dropper vertically and transfer 3 full drops of urine (approx. 120 µL) to the specimen well (S).
  4. Start the timer. Avoid trapping air bubbles in the specimen well.
  5. Read results at 5 minutes. Do not interpret results after 10 minutes.
How to Interpret Results
  • Negative: Two lines appear — one in the Control region (C) and one in the Test region (T). Even a faint test line is a negative result. Cotinine is below 500 ng/mL.
  • Positive: One line appears in the Control region (C) only. No line in the Test region (T). Cotinine exceeds 500 ng/mL.
  • Invalid: No Control line appears. Retest with a new cassette.
Important: All results are preliminary. Confirm any positive results with laboratory confirmation (GC/MS) where required by your testing program.

FAQ

What is Cotinine and why test for it?
Cotinine is the primary metabolite of nicotine and is considered the most reliable biological marker for determining tobacco/nicotine use. Unlike nicotine itself, cotinine has a stable elimination profile unaffected by urine pH, making it ideal for screening.

Will nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) cause a positive result?
Yes. Nicotine patches, gum, lozenges and nasal sprays all produce cotinine. This test detects cotinine from any nicotine source above the 500 ng/mL cut-off.

Can secondhand smoke cause a positive result?
Casual secondhand exposure is unlikely to reach the 500 ng/mL cut-off. However, prolonged or heavy secondhand exposure may produce detectable levels in some cases.

How long is cotinine detectable in urine?
At the 500 ng/mL cut-off, cotinine is typically detectable for up to 2–3 days after the last nicotine use, depending on individual metabolism, frequency of use and hydration.
