Specimen validity and integrity checks

A donor attempting to defeat a urine screen has three options: substitute someone else's sample or a synthetic one, dilute their own, or add a masking agent. This cup checks for all three.

Substitution is caught by the external temperature strip — read it immediately after collection. A sample outside the expected range did not come from the donor in front of you. No chemical check will tell you this.

Dilution and adulteration are caught by the six reagent pads below, read against the supplied colour chart at three to five minutes.

How to use

1. Allow the device to reach room temperature (15–30°C). Do not open the pouch until you are ready to test.
2. Remove the cup from the sealed pouch and write the donor name or ID in the space provided.
3. Collect the urine sample directly in the cup.
4. Read the temperature strip immediately — within four minutes of collection, per standard collection practice.
5. Read the adulteration pads against the colour chart at three to five minutes.
6. Read the drug results at five minutes. Results remain stable for 60 minutes.

How to interpret results

Note that a visible test line means negative. This is the opposite of what people often expect.

• Negative — a red or pink line appears next to T1 or T2 under the drug name. Faint or thin lines still count as negative.
• Preliminary positive — no line appears next to T1 or T2 for that drug. Send the sample for laboratory confirmation.
• Invalid — no line next to C on one or more strips. Discard and retest with a new device.

Do not read results after 60 minutes.

Screening results are preliminary. Any non-negative result should be confirmed by laboratory testing in accordance with your workplace policy.

Frequently asked questions

Can prescription medication cause a preliminary positive?
Yes. The manufacturer states this test does not distinguish between drugs of abuse and certain medications, and may give preliminary positive results where tricyclic antidepressants, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, methadone, buprenorphine or opiates have been taken — including at normal therapeutic doses. Any non-negative result should be confirmed by a laboratory before it is acted on.

Will it pick up MDMA (ecstasy)?
Sometimes, but not reliably. MDMA registers on the methamphetamine panel, but it takes around six times as much MDMA as methamphetamine to trigger a result — roughly 1,750 ng/mL against the 300 ng/mL methamphetamine cut-off. A large or recent dose may register; a smaller or older one may not. It also means a preliminary positive on the methamphetamine panel doesn't tell you which substance was present, which is one reason laboratory confirmation matters.

Which opiates does it detect?
Codeine, heroin, hydrocodone and hydromorphone all register on the opiates panel alongside morphine. As with methamphetamine, a positive identifies the drug class rather than the specific substance. Note that oxycodone does not reliably register on an opiates panel — if you need oxycodone screening, it requires its own panel.

How accurate is it against laboratory testing?
Manufacturer testing against GC/MS showed 94.3% to 100% agreement across all six panels, and over 99% agreement at ±50% of cut-off across nine operators and 20 testing days.

Will common medications interfere?
No interference was found from more than 40 substances tested at 100 µg/mL, including paracetamol, aspirin, ibuprofen, caffeine, ethanol, ranitidine and dextromethorphan.

How long are drugs detectable in urine?
Detection windows vary by drug, dose and individual factors. For workplace decisions, rely on your policy and confirmatory testing.
